What This Tool Does

This counts characters rather than words: every distinct character in the text with its count and its share of the total, shown as a table and as a bar chart. Whitespace is included and labeled, so Space, Newline, Tab and Return appear as rows instead of quietly disappearing.

Two controls change what you are looking at. Case sensitivity is off by default, so the upper and lower case of a letter are counted together; switching it on separates them. A filter narrows the table to letters only or digits only, using proper Unicode rules rather than an A to Z assumption.

Counting works on whole characters as a reader sees them, so an emoji built from several code points counts once rather than two or three times. Alongside the frequency table sit byte counts in both common encodings and a panel of platform character limits with a bar for each.

The overview tab has its own frequency table that always counts case-sensitively and ignores the filter, so it can disagree with the characters tab. The characters tab is the one the controls apply to.
Percentages in the characters tab are relative to whatever is left after filtering, not to the whole text.
There is no file upload. Paste or type the text in.
The frequency table copies out as CSV to your clipboard; there is no file download.
Analysis is immediate on short text and briefly delayed once you go past a couple of thousand characters.

Common Questions

Can I count only the letters?

Yes. Set the filter to letters, and digits and punctuation drop out of the table with the percentages recalculated over what is left.

Does it separate uppercase from lowercase?

Only if you ask. Case-insensitive is the default, which is what you want for frequency analysis; switch it on when case itself is the thing you are measuring.

What else does it report?

Word, sentence, paragraph and line counts, unique words, average word length, reading and speaking time, byte size, and platform character limits including 280 for a standard post and 160 for an SMS.
