What is Placeholder Image Generator?

Free online placeholder image generator to generate placeholder images with custom dimensions, background colors, text, and formats.

Perfect for wireframes, mockups, and development when you need temporary images. Customize the width, height, background color, text color, and display text. Generate a dummy image at any size, from a 150x150 avatar to a 1920x1080 hero, with custom text instead of relying on a remote placeholder URL. Download the image as PNG or use the generated data URI directly in your HTML or CSS so the image works offline. All images are created client-side using the Canvas API. No signup required.

How to Use Placeholder Image Generator

1Set the desired width and height, or choose a preset size
2Customize the background color, text color, and display text
3Preview the generated placeholder image
4Download as PNG or copy the data URI for inline use

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes can I generate?

You can generate images from 1x1 pixel up to 2000x2000 pixels. Common presets are available for standard sizes like 1920x1080 (Full HD), 800x600, 400x300, 150x150 (avatar), and more.

Can I customize the colors and text?

Yes. You can set any background color, text color, and custom display text. By default, the image shows its dimensions (e.g., '800 x 600') but you can change this to any text you need.

What format are the images?

Images are generated as PNG files using the HTML5 Canvas API. You can download them directly or copy the data URI to embed inline in your HTML or CSS.

How is this different from a placeholder URL service?

Remote services build the image from a URL on their server, so the picture breaks if that service is down or blocked. Here the image is rendered in your browser, so you can download a real PNG or copy a data URI that keeps working offline and never calls an external host.

Can I generate a 1920x1080 placeholder with my own text?

Yes. Type 1920 for width and 1080 for height, or pick the Full HD preset, then set the display text to anything you want instead of the default dimensions. Adjust the background and text colors and download the PNG or copy the data URI.
