32:9 aspect ratio
32:9 is the super ultrawide ratio, with a decimal value of 3.5556. It is exactly two 16:9 frames placed side by side.

In detail
The arithmetic is the whole story: doubling the width of a 16:9 frame gives 32:9, so a 5120 by 1440 panel is precisely two 2560 by 1440 displays with no bezel between them. That is also how the panels are used in practice, with two full applications side by side rather than one stretched across the width.
It is the most extreme ratio in the calculator's preset list, half again as wide as the anamorphic cinema frame. Nothing is delivered in this shape: no film, no video service, no photograph library. Anything shown full screen on such a panel is either heavily pillarboxed or synthesised specifically for it.
For layout the constraint is human rather than technical. Comfortable reading measure tops out somewhere around ninety characters, which at a normal body size is a fraction of the available width, so a full width paragraph on a 32:9 panel is not merely ugly, it is genuinely hard to track from the end of one line to the start of the next.
That makes it a genuinely good dashboard shape and a bad document shape. Several narrow columns, each with its own measure, uses the width properly. One wide column does not, and no amount of typographic care will fix it. The same reasoning applies to imagery: something built from repeated panels reads across the width, while a single photograph stretched to fill it does not.
Examples
2560 x 1440 doubled -> 5120 x 1440
5120 / 1440 = 3.5556
(16 / 9) * 2 = 3.5556
// 32:9 is 16:9 with the width doubled@media (min-aspect-ratio: 3 / 1) {
.board {
display: grid;
grid-template-columns: repeat(4, minmax(0, 1fr));
gap: 24px;
}
.board p { max-width: 65ch; }
}Things that catch people out
- No content is authored at this ratio. A full screen image has to be made for it deliberately or it will be pillarboxed.
- Full width text at this ratio is unreadable regardless of font size. Cap the measure and add columns.
- A media query on width alone will not detect this class of display, since a 5120 pixel panel and a very large 16:9 one report similar widths. Query the aspect ratio.

What is an aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is width divided by height, and it says nothing about resolution or file size. How to simplify one, read it as a decimal, and use it correctly.
