In detail
The frame is the same 1080 by 1920 as a Story, and the composition rules are not. The heaviest interference here is a vertical column of action controls on the right hand side and a block of caption text and audio attribution across the lower left. Together they take a substantial L shaped bite out of the bottom right of the frame.
That asymmetry has a practical consequence: a subject centred horizontally sits partly behind the control column, so vertical video for this platform is usually framed slightly left of centre. It is the opposite instinct from a Story, where the interference is symmetrical top and bottom.
The cover frame is chosen from the video rather than uploaded as a separate file, which means the composition that reads well in motion also has to read well as a still. A shot with the subject small in the frame can be a fine opening beat and a poor cover, and there is no second asset to fix it with.
For a still at this size, the cropper offers a 9:16 ratio and the social post generator composes at 1080 by 1920. Neither knows where this platform puts its controls, so the safe area is still a judgement you make and check on a real device.

display: grid;
place-content: center start;
padding-inline: 6% 22%;
padding-block: 10% 20%;
}The larger inline end padding reserves the right hand control column.
TikTok: controls right, caption lower left
Story: profile chip top, reply bar bottom
Shorts: actions right, title and description bottom
// one 1080 x 1920 export, three separate safe area checksThings that catch people out
- Centring a subject horizontally puts it behind the action rail. Frame left of centre for this platform specifically.
- The cover is a frame of the video, not a separate upload, so a video with no strong still in it has no good cover.
- Safe areas here are inferred from the current interface and change with app updates. Verify on a device before a campaign, not after.
