iPad Pro 12.9 inch screen size: 2048 by 2732
2048 by 2732 is the device pixel resolution of the large tablet panel. At two times scale that is 1024 by 1366 in layout units, and the ratio reduces to 512:683.

In detail
The scale factor here is two rather than three, so the layout size is exactly half the panel: 1024 by 1366. Both halves are whole numbers, which makes this one of the tidier device targets to design against, and 1024 is a familiar figure because it was the layout width of the original tablet at one times scale.
The ratio does not reduce to anything memorable. Dividing by the greatest common divisor of four leaves 512:683, and 683 is prime, so that is as far as it goes. The decimal is 1:1.3340, which is tantalisingly close to 3:4 at 1:1.3333 but not equal to it. A layout built on an exact 3:4 assumption will be out by about half a pixel per thousand, which is invisible on screen and enough to fail an exact dimension check.
Tablets are used in both orientations, which is the real design constraint. The same artwork has to work at 2048 by 2732 and at 2732 by 2048, and a composition anchored to the top of the portrait frame ends up anchored to the left of the landscape one. Designing around a centred safe area rather than an edge is what makes rotation survivable.
The image resizer caps at 8192 pixels per side, so both orientations of this canvas are comfortably within range. Neither dimension is one of its presets, so type them in, or work out an intermediate size with the calculator first.
Examples
2048 / 2 = 1024 // layout width
2732 / 2 = 1366 // layout height
gcd(2048, 2732) = 4
512 : 683 // 683 is prime, no further reduction512 / 683 = 0.74963
3 / 4 = 0.75
difference = 0.00037, about 0.05 percent
// visually identical, numerically differentThings that catch people out
- It is not 3:4. Close enough to look right, different enough to fail an equality check on dimensions.
- The same canvas has to work rotated. Anchoring content to one edge breaks in the other orientation.
- Designing at device pixels rather than layout pixels doubles every font size you specify, which makes a mockup impossible to hand over.
