In detail
The numbers look arbitrary and are not: 1584 is exactly four times 396, so the greatest common divisor is 396 and the ratio reduces cleanly to 4:1. That is even wider than the 3:1 banner on other networks, which makes it the most extreme shape in the whole preset list and the one least tolerant of a photograph.
The profile photo sits over the lower left of the strip and is drawn as a circle. On a desktop layout the overlap covers a meaningful fraction of the left third, and the strip is also shorter in proportion on a narrow screen, so the safe region is a band across the centre right rather than the whole rectangle.
Working at 4:1 forces a particular kind of design. A wordmark set large enough to read, a horizontal gradient, a repeating pattern or an abstract crop all survive; a landscape photograph does not, because a 4:1 crop of any normal scene leaves a strip of sky and a strip of ground with nothing recognisable between them.
There is no 4:1 preset in the cropper. Entering 4 and 1 as a custom ratio, or the explicit 1584 by 396, produces the shape, and the calculator confirms it before export. Exporting at twice the linear size and letting the platform downscale keeps it sharp on a high density display.
Examples
396 * 4 = 1584
gcd(1584, 396) = 396
1584 / 396 = 4 // aspect-ratio: 4 / 1;.banner {
aspect-ratio: 4 / 1;
display: grid;
align-content: center;
justify-content: end;
padding-inline: 0 6%; /* keep content clear of the lower left */
}Things that catch people out
- The profile photo covers the lower left corner. Anything placed there is lost on every screen size.
- A 4:1 crop of a photograph almost never reads. Design the banner rather than cropping an existing image into it.
- Exporting at exactly 1584 wide looks soft on a high density display. Double the dimensions and keep the ratio.
