What This Tool Does
512 by 512 is the size app stores, extension manifests and web app manifests tend to ask for. It is large enough to be scaled down into every smaller icon slot without going back to the source artwork each time.
Type it into the width and height fields; the icon presets on this tool stop at 256, so 512 is a manual entry rather than a preset. Keep the aspect lock on when the source is already square and it stays square.
PNG is the right output for an icon. Transparency is preserved, edges stay hard, and a logo at this size is small enough that lossless costs nothing. JPEG would add a white background and soften the edges.
Limits Worth Knowing
- An icon should start from a vector export or a large raster. Enlarging a 128 pixel logo to 512 gives you a blurry 512 pixel logo.
- Icon presets are provided for 16, 32, 64, 128 and 256 pixels; 512 is typed in.
- Choosing JPEG fills any transparent area with white, which is almost never what an icon wants.
- The downloaded file is named after the dimensions rather than after the original.
- Everything happens in your browser, so an unreleased logo does not go anywhere.
